Panama has an extraordinary variety of birds for such a small country. Though it is only the size of the state of South Carolina, Panama has 976 species of birds, exceeding the combined bird lists of the United States and Canada. Much of this remarkable diversity is due to the location of Panama between North and South America: our bird life is the product of these two continents.
One of the best birding sites in Panama and around the world is the famous trail called Pipeline Road. The road passes through the rainforest Soberania National Park in the Province of Colon, and offers excellent conditions for nature lovers. In the park lives around 105 species of mammals (to name a few: deer, agouti, howler monkey, raccoon, coati, jaguar), 79 species of reptiles, 55 species of amphibians and 31 species of freshwater fishes. The Pipeline Road is considered by many as one of the best birding locations throughout the tropics. In one day you can see up to 300 or more species.
Your next stop will be at the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center environmental education center: it is an environmental education and ecotourism project administered by the “Eugene Eisenmann Avifauna Foundation”, which aims to conserve birds through sustainability projects. environmental. Enjoy nature, take a walk on the trails, discover the great variety of birds from the 32-meter high observation tower, and relax watching the hummingbirds in the Visitor Center.
