The Republic of Panama is divided into 9 Provinces and 3 main Comarcas. The ‘Comarcas Indigenas’ are traditional regions, mainly inhabited by indigenous and governed by autonomous indigenous governments.
The nine provinces are Bocas del Toro, Chiriqui, Cocle, Colon, Darien, Herrera, Los Santos, Panama and Veraguas.
The three provincial-level Comarcas are Embera, Kuna Yala and Ngöbe-Buglé. The provincial borders have not changed since they were established during Panama’s independence in 1903.
