Ethnic Traces (12 days)

12 Days - Visit an Embera native community and learn about their traditions and lifestyle; Enjoy the beauty of the San Blas Islands on a sailboat and visit the indigenous Guna communities, go to the Darién jungles to meet the Wounaan natives

Day 1: Meet and transfer from Tocumen International Airport to your hotel.  Overnight at ‘Country Inn & Suites Amador’ in a standard room.

Day 2: Embera Tour: The Embera tribe lives on a dam called Lake Alajuela on the upper side of the Chagres River, an hour from Panama City. On the shores of Lake Alajuela there´s a dock called ‘Puerto Corotu’ where you will be transported upriver to the Embera Native Community by ‘piragua’ (native canoe). This is an hour canoe ride and a wonderful experience out of ‘National Geographic’ you will never forget! You will hear directly from the Indians what their life is like:  Their hunting, fishing, harvesting, how they treat their illnesses and much more. Experience up close the Embera Indian traditional dances and see how they produce their body paintings, woven baskets, plates and masks.

Day 3: This day includes a transfer to San Blas with a 4×4. At arrival, you will take a boat to the small island ‘Kuanidup’, where you stay at the ‘Cabañas Kuanidup’. The San Blas archipelago, which is situated in the Caribbean Sea a few miles off the north coast of Panama, is selected as the third most beautiful destination in the world! Kuanidup is a utopian, castaway-style isle, about as large as a soccer field, fringed with palms strung with hammocks that look picture-perfect in their symmetry.

The island is ringed in coral here but there also is a deeper, sandy spot by their dock that makes for an ideal swimming area. Feel like Robinson Crusoe and enjoy your stay far away from the city and the noise!

Day 4: You will have the chance to take place in excursions to other small islands such as the pristine ‘Isla del Perro’, where you will appreciate the snorkeling. Visit and meet the traditional Kuna Indian villages for a close-up view of Kuna life, their customs and traditions and see their famous Molas, which you can purchase if you wish. Enjoy another night at the ‘Cabañas Kuanidup’!

Day 5: Meet your captain, who will pick you up in Kuanidup and be welcomed aboard one of the San Blas Sailing yachts. Enjoy a sailing cruise around the San Blas archipelago and experience the beauty of the 365 islands, among which only 10% are inhabited!

Day 6 & Day 7: Experience two beautiful days sailing around the San Blas archipelago, visit the traditional Kuna Indian villages and see their famous Molas. Explore deserted islands, go snorkeling, fishing, kayaking … and enjoy real moments of peace reading, and relaxing away from the massive tourism!


Day 8: After a boat trip to Carti, we will take you to Santa Fe, located in the province of Darien. Once you enter the Darien province, the paved road ends and the rough 4X4 terrain begins.   Later, you will board a ‘piragua’ (native canoe) to the Wounaan Village of Boca de Lara.

The Wounaan are very curious about you, just as you are about them, and will tend to hang around to observe and see the newcomers.  Try your luck at fishing like the locals. Later, you will discover the wonders of the mangroves in ‘piraguas’.  As dusk approaches, you will have the opportunity to see the local crafts and dances. Overnight at ‘Dossi Lodge’.

Day 9: After breakfast you will leave the village to reach the Lagarto River, one of the largest of Panama and you will discover the secrets of the River and enjoy animal meetings by canoe! You will have dinner at the lodge. Another night at ‘Dossi Lodge’.

Day 10: After breakfast, you will head towards Puerto Kimba by 4X4.  Here you will board a ‘panga’ outboard boat, which will take you to discover the ‘Golfo de San Miguel’; it’s Spanish forts, La Palma (Darien’s capital) and with some luck you will see some dolphins. Afterwards: lunch at La Palma.  Some of the birds that you may observe here are: pelicans, ibis, herons, frigates and kingfisher.  In the late afternoon, you will be taken to the lodge, a simple but comfortable quality Lodge in the Valley in the heart of Darien.

Rooms with view to the Valley; meals are served in a large Hut to share together moments of coexistence. The calm of this location makes it a resting place, surrounded by great wildlife, a variety of extraordinary landscapes in accordance with all ethnic groups that populate this mysterious region.

Day 11: Afterwards we will take you back to Panama City, where you spend the night at the ‘Country Inn Hotel’.  Overnight in a standard room.

Day 12: At the appropriate time, transport to Tocumen International Airport.
